As a precautionary measure on the eve of the Independence Day celebrations.
TIRUCHI: Security has been stepped up in railway stations, trains and bridges as a precautionary measure on the eve of the Independence Day celebrations.
An elaborate security scheme has been prepared by the Railway Police, Tiruchi district, which has jurisdiction from Villupuram to Kanyakumari covering both Tiruchi and Madurai railway divisions.
As part of the arrangement, the authorities have deployed checking squads in important express trains including the Kumbakonam-Chennai Rockfort Express, Coimbatore-Chennai Express, Madurai-Chennai Pandian Express and Tirunelveli-Chennai Nellai Express.
This is apart from the regular men from GRP as well as the Railway Protection Force who travel in trains as part of security duty.
Sources said on Sunday that each squad headed by a Sub Inspector, would comprise five policemen who would be on board main express trains.
The tightening of security started from August 12 with armed policemen deployed at major bridges including the Cauvery, the Kollidam and the Kudamurutti in Tiruchi.
The GRP have been given some extra strength from the Tiruchi City Police. Vigil had been stepped up in important railway stations including Tiruchi Junction where doorframe metal detectors have been installed at five places.
The sources said the GRP authorities had requested the District Collectors to provide open patrolling by the village thalaiyaris.
Superintendents of Police had been requested to post their personnel at minor bridges coming under their jurisdiction.
A separate team would monitor through the closed circuit television sets the movement of passengers in Tiruchi Junction, the sources said adding that the team would function round-the-clock.
Similarly, security has also been stepped up at the Tiruchi airport .
