Many low-lying areas and arterial roads inundated
Tuticorin: Sudden downpour on Thursday afternoon brought cheers to the people reeling under hot and humid conditions for the past few weeks.
Accompanied by a mild thunder and lightning, rain lashed the town for almost an hour.
Within minutes after the skies opened up, low-lying residential areas and roads in the town got inundated owing to poor drainage facilities. The normal flow of traffic was affected even on arterial roads such as George Road, after they were flooded making it difficult for the drivers to negotiate potholes. On many of the roads, garbage was floating posing hardship to pedestrians.
Even after the rain stopped, the sky remained overcast for the remaining part of the day.
Heavy rain lashed various parts of the district for the second day on Thursday. Normal life was thrown out of gear and students and office-goers were put to hardship.
Almost all the tanks and ponds are filling up fast in the district. The maximum rainfall of 24 mm was recorded at Aralvoimozhi, it was 22.3 mm in Kottaram, 15.8 mm in Myladi and 12.2 mm in Nagercoil.
The level in Pechipparai dam stood at 35.70 feet against the full level of 48 feet, it was 56.30 feet (77 feet) in Perunchani, 7.81 feet in Chittar I (18 feet) and 7.90 feet (18) in Chittar II.
