Water Office Road is a broken marriage of loose stones and fine sand

ERODE: The long stretch of Water Office Road, off Bhavani Road, is perhaps a perfect example for a difficult road.

It has all the components that makes you go up and hit the seat as you ride pillion, hold your nose to the dust that will paint you brownish red and challenge your vehicle's tyres. For, the road is a broken marriage of loose stones and fine sand.

Bad state

The road that comes under the Erode Municipality has been in a bad state for the last one month, say shopkeepers.

The civic body employed machines to prepare the road for a new coat of blue metal and tar. In the process, the road became uneven with loose stones brought to the surface.

Civic body

Subsequently, the civic body covered the stones with sand and dust that is yet to settle down.

At present, the dust and sand is so much that it is difficult to have a clear look at the rear of the vehicle.

Unbearable

For those who run their shops on the road, it is worse. They say the dust is unbearable. "The dust is bad. Any number of cleaning and wiping is futile," says S. Anandan, who runs a spare parts store.

He opens the cover of a public call office phone and shows the inside, which is coated brown with dust, to prove his point.

What make it worse is that the road houses a number of lorry and heavy vehicle workshops, which increase vehicular movement.

Not only that the strain on whatever remains to be a called road is high because of the heavy vehicle movement.

At present only mounds of blue metal are visible, no sign of the road. The residents say it has been that way for the last 40 days or at least a month.

The municipal officials assure that the work will begin this week.
