SALEM: The preparations for the local body elections in the district are in full swing, Collector N. Mathivanan has said. After inspecting the transportation of polling materials to various parts in the district here on Wednesday, he said that a total of 7,587 ballot boxes were required in the rural areas and 2,715 in the urban areas.
The polling materials, guides for the presiding officers and candidates, handbooks on model code of conduct and other materials were also sent to the panchayat unions, town panchayats and municipalities in the district. A total of 29,167 officials would be involved in election duty in the district. Of which, 18,464 officials would be involved in the rural areas, 6,820 in Salem Corporation, 768 in municipalities, 108 in the third grade municipalities and 3,007 in town panchayats, the Collector said. Mr. Mathivanan said the district administration had identified sensitive polling stations and would take efforts to provide adequate security to these stations.
He said that steps would be taken to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections. The district had a total of 23,48,509 voters (Men - 11,78,568 and Women - 11,69,941).
