Parks abuzz with activity

The number of people, who have benefited by the parks that have sprouted all over Chennai, designed and maintained by the Chennai Corporation, is on the rise.

Whether it is between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. or between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., the parks buzz with walkers, joggers, exercise buffs and Yoga enthusiasts.

Group activities have also increased. At the Haddows Road Park in Nungambakkam, a large group of people burst into peals of hysterical laughter... no, they haven't gone crazy, they just happen to be part of the Haddows Road Park Laughing Club.

At Independence Day Park near Valluvar Kottam, a master turns up in the morning to teach children and adults Surya Namaskars, Yoga Asanas and Pranayama.

Unlike earlier days, the Chennai Corporation keeps a sharp eye out for miscreants. The park attendants are always on the alert, pulling up people who walk on the grass, pluck flowers and leaves or hang around the park after closing hours.

Complex problems,

simple solutions

It was a function to inaugurate the pedestrian subway at Pallavaram. Former MLA M.A. Vaidyalingam appealed to South Chennai MP and Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R.Baalu to sanction a similar subway at Meenambakkam, as according to him, a large number of people crossed the road to reach the western side which had three TASMAC wine shops.

The Union Minister said the solution was very simple. "To prevent people from crossing the road to reach the wine shops, let us not build a subway, but shift the three wine shops to the opposite side," he said amidst laughter from those in the audience and on the stage too. Subsequently, Mr. Baalu sanctioned the construction of pedestrian subways at Meenambakkam and Chromepet at a combined cost of Rs. 8 crore.

A director's wish

Director K. Viswanath, the maker of Telugu films such as `Sankarabaranam' and `Sagara Sangamam' the other day expressed a wish -- to work as an assistant for just a couple days with directors Babu and K. Balachander.

"I have asked them personally but they have not said anything. I wanted to work with them for one film. I scaled down my request to seven day, and I am now requesting them to take me under their wings for just 3 days. Both of them are smiling but are not giving me an answer," Viswanath said.

Are the two ace directors listening?
