At the last Municipal Council meeting in Tuticorin
Tuticorin: The last Municipal Council meeting, prior to the ensuing local body elections, was held here on Thursday.
Soon after the commencement of the meeting, the AIADMK Councillor, Ramalakshmi, asked the Chairman, Manoj Kumar, to take measures on a war footing to curb chikungunya, which was spreading fast in the town.
Kottu Raja (DMK) and few other councillors too joined Ramalakshmi and urged the Chairman to conduct medical camps to create awareness among the public of the disease.
The Council also paid tribute to ex-Councillor Sankaran Pillai, who died recently.
The Municipal Commissioner, K. Kanagaraj, said that of the total 51 wards, the Government has reserved two wards for Scheduled Caste (general) candidates, one ward for Scheduled Caste (woman) candidate and 16 wards from women candidates (general).
Wards reserved for SC (general) are 44 and 45. The wards for women (general) included 4, 16, 38, 18, 21,15,19,43,40,25, 31, 35, 6, 39, 33 and 20.
The only ward that was reserved for SC (women) was ward no: 2.
Official sources said that of the 36 wards under Kovilpatti Municipality, two were reserved for SC (general), one for SC (women) and 11 for women (general).
The ward reservations were determined under Tamil Nadu Town Panchayat, Thrid Grade Municipalities, Municipalities and Corporations (Delimitation of Wards or Divisions and Reservations) Rules 1996.
