    PUDUCHERRY: People on diets would know how effective salads and clear soups are they supply the body with nutrients and help cut down on other food stuff. But then, you can take salads even if you are not on a diet.

    Making salads is serious business, because it is about bringing together the correct amount of each vegetable or fruit. Balancing the colours, size and shape of every piece that goes into it has to be kept in mind. If you have the talent to toss in vegetables or fruits together or cooked meat pieces, then the salad making competition to be organised by the Pondicherry Rivage Ladies Circle 47 is for you.

    Called "Salad Fest", the competition will be held at the Seagulls Restaurant at 2.30 p.m. on October 29. You can make salads with vegetables, fruits and meat and are expected to bring your own ingredients and utensils and cutlery including peelers and knives.

    Things that need to be cooked like vegetables or meat can be done at home, but the cutting and decorating at the competition itself. The time allotted is one hour, from 3 p.m. onwards and the salads will be judged between 4 and 5 p.m.

    The event is supported by the Department of Tourism. The winners will receive cash prizes and dinner vouchers at various hotels. The first prize is Rs.1,500 plus a dinner voucher at the le Dupleix, the second prize Rs.1,000 plus dinner at The Promenade and the third prize is Rs.500 plus dinner for four at the Hotel Surguru.

    There are consolation prizes too. Entry fee is Rs.100 per participant and are available at President Collections, Richie Rich on Nehru Street and Daily Bread on Ambour Salai.
