Thanks to reservation of seats in the local body elections
Thanjavur: The Thanjavur Municipality will have the first woman chairperson on October 28 in its 140 years history thanks to the reservation made for women in the local body elections.
J. Thenmozhi, 51, wife of Jayabal, former Municipal councillor and daughter of late Nannilam Nadarajan, DMK speaker, has been chosen as the candidate for the post.
Her election has now been a foregone conclusion as the party has announced her as the chairperson candidate.
The Thanjavur Municipality was formed in the year 1866. Since then only male candidates have been its chairmen, including Rao Bahadur A. Y. Arulanandasamy Nadar, S. Ayyasamy Vandayar, A. Y. S. Almost all the roads in the town has been dug and are not motorable.
Some roads remain dangerous even for pedestrians. Situation has become worse with North East monsoon picking up.
There are 29 DMK, 16 AIADMK, two Congress, one CPI(M) members in the 51-member council. The others are Independents.
