ERODE: Residents of Nethajinagar, Surampatty grade three municipality on Monday disallowed municipal tractors with garbage to enter the graveyard in the area. They raised objection to using the graveyard a compost yard.

Over 500 residents of Nethajinagar, VOC Street and nearby areas have been using the graveyard for many years. However, municipal garbage has been dumped there for the last few months. Bodies of animals such as dogs too are being thrown into the graveyard, say residents. This has even led to diseases, they claim. Despite opposition, the municipality has done nothing so far. A group surrounded two tractors and locked the graveyard.

The police and municipal officials rushed to the spot and assured them that within a month's time, the graveyard would be cleaned dumping of garbage stopped. On this, the crowd dispersed.
