Says poll violence has left an "indelible blot" on the DMK

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday flayed the police for arresting party legislator P.K. Sekar Babu and "foisting" cases on him and another MLA, B. Valarmathi.

In a statement here, she said the cases had been filed against the two MLAs involving them in a case relating to the seizure of petrol bombs from a gang during a vehicle check on the outskirts of Chennai on Sunday. The AIADMK had never adopted such violent practices.

Mr. Sekar Babu was arrested only with a view to prevent him from discharging his duties as the party's North Chennai district secretary and putting forward his views in the Assembly without fear, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.

Accusing activists of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi of indulging in violence and irregularities, she said the police had only seized the vehicles used by them.

As the poll violence had left an "indelible blot" on the DMK, the ruling party was trying to "cover its mistakes and shift the blame on the AIADMK," she alleged.

The AIADMK leader said she would initiate legal action against those who levelled "baseless charges" against her on the issue of violence in the civic polls.

She accused the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and the Ministers K. Anbazhagan and Arcot N. Veerasamy of hurling charges unnecessarily against her.
