ERODE: Political parties should not canvass for votes at places of worship, said Collector D. Karthikeyan at the meeting. However, BJP State propaganda president A. Saravanan said that the police and election authorities permitted political parties to campaign in front of churches and mosques.
It was common to find political parties in front of churches on Sundays, and mosques on Fridays.
The Collector replied that instructions would be given to the police and returning officers on this.
Erode district president of the Nation Congress Party Palani claimed that a few political parties were giving away gifts to voters. The Collector sought details for action against such acts.
Mr. Palani wanted round-the-clock security in wards 33, 34 and 35, as they were sensitive.
The Collector said 548 polling booths were identified as sensitive, and police pickets were posted on 259 premises.
CPI district deputy secretary G. Venkatachalam; BJP district president P.A. Somasundaram; CPI(M) representative V. Natarjan; AIADMK representatives Thoppu Venkatachalam, S. Perumal and P. Kesavamurthy participated.
The Collector instructed the candidates to submit their election expenditure accounts at the retuning office once in three days in the specified format that the Election Commission provided them.
