200 huts submerged

ERODE: Perumpallam Odai was flooded on Tuesday owing to heavy rain in Kadirampatty, Erode and Sengodampalayam and water entered more than 200 thatched huts on the banks of the Odai. Inmates of the huts have been accommodated in the nearby municipal school.

Perumpallam Odai starts from Kadirampatty area, flows through Erode town and merges with Cauvery. Erode and its surrounding areas experienced very heavy rain on Monday night and rain water started flowing into the Odai.

Traffic on Jeevanandham Road and in Kallukadaimedu was affected because of the flood. Municipal Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj visited the Perumpallam Odai area, instructed the health department to spray clay powder and other antiseptic materials in the area. Contaminated water is flowing into Cauvery River and people are asked to drink only boiled water. Water overflowing from Gani Rowthar tank has entered Pichaikkaranpallam odai.

Kangeyam experienced 85.2 mm of rainfall on Monday night, Bhavanisagar 83 mm, Erode 80.4 mm, Bhavani 40 mm, Perundurai 39 mm, Dharapuram 37.2 mm, Sathyamangalam 20 mm, Gobichettipalayam 15 mm and Moolanure 9 mm.

Because of rain in the catchment area, inflow into the Lower Bhavani Project canal has increased to 6803 cusecs and water level in the reservoir on Tuesday is 103.90 feet as against the full level of 105 feet.

Seven thousand cusecs of water have been discharged into the canal and river. People living on the banks of River Bhavani have been evacuated to safer places.
