TAMBARAM: A 22-year-old gentleman cadet P. Azad of the Officers Training Academy committed suicide in St. Thomas Mount on Sunday.

Nandambakkam police said inquiries the trainee may have committed suicide because of acute stomach pain. Azad, son of Padmanabhan, a retired non-commissioned officer of the Indian Air Force, had joined the Academy last month.

He had complained repeatedly of stomach pain for which he was treated at the Military Hospital. Azad had phoned his father a couple of days and asked him to come to OTA so he could take temporary medical leave.

On Sunday morning, the rest of the cadets from the company left the quarters around 6.30; Azad had shared tea and biscuits with them.

Mr. Padmanabhan reached the Academy on Sunday morning and officers sent for Azad so that he could meet his father. The staff knocked repeatedly at Azad's room in the quarters, but there was no response. They looked into the room from the ventilator and noticed Azad hanging from the ceiling fan. Army sources said a Court of Inquiry had been ordered.
