30 borewells at Gandhinagar on Nasiyanure Road affected

ERODE: All the 30 borewells at Gandhinagar on Nasiyanure Road here have been polluted, thanks to effluent discharge by textile dyers. Located near the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal, water level at the borewell of all the 30 houses goes up when water is released into the canal.

President of Gandhinagar House Owners Association K. Krishnasamy says a few textile industries in the area have discharged effluents into the canal, contaminating groundwater, and consequently borewell. This has necessitated them to buy water sold in lorries. During rain, the discharge is high.

Often, the LBP canal overflowed, only to stagnate two to three feet in front of the houses. Residents, many of them government employees, were put to severe hardship. The place has no proper drainage or roads either, Mr. Krishnasamy says. They have made several complaints to the Collector, but to no avail. He wanted the Collector to depute an officer to inspect the area for action.
