NAGAPATTINAM: Water has started receding from most of the paddy fields submerged following rain in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district, thanks to a let up in the northeast monsoon in the last 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.

A senior official of the Agriculture Department said that water was yet to recede only in about 1,000 hectares of the 25,000 hectares submerged in the last four-days rains.

The Collector Tenkasi S.Jawahar said that the standing samba paddy crop was in good condition and the entire transplantation exercise would be completed in 10 days.

He said that it had been proposed to raise samba paddy crop on the normal area of 1.03 lakh hectares in the district of which about 30,000 hectares would come under direct-sowing in Vedaranyam, Thalainayar and Nagapattinam blocks.
