`Nadha Kala Mani' title conferred on nagaswaram vidwan

CHENNAI: Efforts must be taken to conduct music festivals in places other than Chennai too to ensure that new talents are identified and encouraged, Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami said on Monday.

Music sabhas can work alongside organisations such as the Southern Regional Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, to scout for fresh talent in districts, he said while inaugurating the music festival of the Nagaswara Chakravarthy Dr. Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai Trust. Mr. Gopalaswami also conferred the `Nadha Kala Mani' award on nagaswaram vidwan Sembanarkoil S.R.D. Vaidyanathan.

In his felicitation speech, A. Natarajan, former director, Doordarshan Kendra, said nagaswaram formed the basis for Carnatic music and should never be allowed to become a dying art.

R. Krishnaswamy, secretary of Narada Gana Sabha and T.P.S. Sundaranathan and D. Velmurugan, trustees of the Dr. Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai Trust, spoke.
