Around 7,000 candidates were called for interviews
CHENNAI: A job fair on the Chepauk campus of the University of Madras on Saturday attracted thousands of students.
The main attraction was the presence of a host of leading job providers including Tata Consultancy, Citibank, HDFC, Dell, Hutch, HCL and Ford.
The fair, hosted jointly by the University and HR firm Expertus, will be open on Sunday too.
About 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from various city colleges visited the fair to check out job openings. Besides students of the regular stream, it also saw visitors in the form of students of the Institute of Distance Education.
About 7,000 candidates were called for interviews by various companies. Students from other districts such as Erode and Coimbatore added to the crowd of job seekers.
Faculty at the university said that the crowd was more compared to last year's job fair probably due to increase in the number of companies. Several undergraduate students dropped their resumes at the stalls of companies. For U. Kavitha and S. Geethalakshmi, B.com. students of Chellammal College, it was a learning experience to prepare resumes and catch a glimpse of the job market.
However, several science and postgraduate students were disappointed over the lack of job opportunities in technical and health fields. Pavithra, a biochemistry student from Valliammal College, said there were no job opportunities in health and pharmacy sectors related to their stream of study.
S.Harish Kumar, a M.Sc. computer science technology student, said a host of companies were BPOs offering jobs in call centres and in their sales department.
They were more suited for undergraduates.
