CHENNAI: Procurement of kuruvai paddy in the delta districts is almost over.
Daily arrival in direct purchase centres of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, which was about 1000 tonnes a few weeks back, came down to less than 500 tonnes in the last three days.
The Corporation has so far procured 3.11 lakh tonnes in the current season. This is the first time after three years of drought, that the Corporation has procured more than three lakh tonnes.
The Government got the Centre's permission for extending the rabi (kuruvai) season for two more months i.e. up to September 30 and kept its 550 DPCs open for the benefit of farmers who wanted to sell their produce.
The procurement, according to a corporation official, will pick up from next week as samba harvest in the delta districts will begin from the middle of this month.
As the condition of samba paddy is good, the corporation expects good procurement. In the last samba season, the corporation purchased more than 13 lakh tonnes.
