Erode: Mahakavi Bharathiar is stated to have delivered his last lecture at Karungalpalayam during his visit to Erode in 1921. The library constructed here to mark his visit is now in a dilapidated condition. Those coming to the library find it very difficult to go through the books or spend time reading.

Since it does not have a compound wall, many are using it for night stay.

At least on the occasion of Bharathiar birthday on December 11, some initiative should be taken to have a new building, feel regular visitors. It will be an apt manner to remember this great poet, they say.

"If reading habit is improved, certainly a man can lead a disciplined life," says president of the People Thinker's Forum, T. Stalin Gunasekaran.

The forum is taking efforts to establish at least 100 libraries in five years. Already six libraries have been formed and handed over to the District Library Authority.

Erode district is having 96 branch libraries and 46 rural libraries. Many buildings are functioning in rented buildings.

There is no separate fund for the construction of buildings for libraries. But with MP funds some of the buildings are constructed.

Says one of the regular visitor to the Karungalpalayam library, Karpagavalli: "I am a regular visitor of the library for the last two decades. Many people prefer books related to competitive examinations."

Officials said that they are providing the books allotted to them by the Government. They said that if anyone come forward to develop the library, they will get approval from the Government.
