Udhagamandalam: The need to remove encroachments at the municipal market here has been emphasised by the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam.

In a letter to the Municipal Commissioner, the secretary of the association, G. Janardhanan, pointed out that encroachments inside the market were proliferating at a rapid pace.

Urging him to tackle the problem, he said that if any of the traders persisted in occupying space meant for the public, their licences should be cancelled and their shops sealed. Meat shops in various parts of the town, which do not adhere to rules relating to hygiene, should be removed. Appropriate action should be taken against officials who had allowed pesticide stores to function close to bakeries, fruit shops and provision outlets.
