A large number of devotees witnessed the car festival at Sri Pundarikaksha Perumal temple at Tiruvellarai, near here, on Sunday.
Amidst religious fervour, the processional idols of Sri Sentharamaraikannan and Sri Pankajavalli were brought to the temple car at about 4.30 a.m. and were taken to the ‘Ther thatti mandapam' an hour later. The ‘ratharohanam' - rituals associated with taking the idols to the temple car - was performed in the ‘Meena lagnam', according to S. Ramesh Bhattar, temple priest.
Rituals were performed at the end of which the devotees pulled the car amidst slogans in glory of Lord Govinda. A group of vedic pandits, recited the Vedas all through the festival till the car was brought to rest.
G.Srinivasa Rangan, temple superintendent, C. Mariappan, assistant commissioner, and S. Jayaraman, joint commissioner, supervised the arrangements for the festival in consultation with the villagers who have an annual turn system in ensuring the movement of the car.
This year the movement was monitored by a group of youth from Chinna Kattukulam, Thillampatti, Theerampalayam, Udayampatti and Periya Kattukulam - all around Tiruvellarai.
