170 seats will be in the general pool for students from the State

CHENNAI: If the Medical Council of India grants recognition to new medical colleges at Tiruvarur and Villupuram, 200 extra MBBS seats will become available during the first round of counselling itself, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam announced here on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Panneerselvam said that an MCI team had inspected the premises of both colleges and was expected to give its verdict by June-end. “We are hopeful that the two colleges will be recognised and we will be able to offer more seats to the students.”

If the recognition comes through, apart from 15 seats in each college that will go to the all India quota, 85 seats each will be available for the State quota. A total of 170 seats will be in the general pool for students from Tamil Nadu. While the total number of MBBS seats in the 15 government medical colleges is 1,745, 262 seats will be surrendered to the all India quota, leaving 1,483 seats for the State quota. In addition, a total of 251 seats will be available from the four private medical colleges for the government quota.

In the sole Government Dental College, 85 seats are available after surrendering 15 seats to the all India quota and a total of 847 seats are being made available via the State quota surrendered by 17 self-financing dental colleges that have retained 523 seats.

The following rule of reservation will be followed while allotting seats: Open Competition — 31 per cent; Backward Classes — 26.5 per cent; Backward Classes (Muslim) — 3.5 per cent; Most Backward Classes/ Denotified Communities — 20 per cent; Scheduled Castes — 15.2 per cent; Scheduled Castes (Arunthathiyar) — 2.8 per cent; and Scheduled Tribes — 1 per cent.
