Expressing their strong opposition to the Tiruchi Corporation decision to privatise sanitation works in Central and Chathram bus stand and the Gandhi Market in the city, members of the Tiruchi District Rural Development and Local Administration Employees Association staged a protest in front of the corporation office on Wednesday.

A.Ilanchezhian, president, Corporation Sanitary Workers Association, affiliated to the CITU, who had planned to go on an indefinite fast against the move, was arrested by the police.

The agitation came in the wake of a resolution approved by the Corporation Council recently to privatise sanitation works in the bus stands and the market in view of the severe shortage of sanitary workers in the civic body.

In the past, the corporation has had several bad experiences through privatising sanitation works at the bus stands and the market and hence the civic body should give up the latest move entirely, the protestors demanded.

Instead, the Corporation should recruit more sanitary workers. Vacancies caused by retirements and deaths of sanitary workers should also be filled up. Only by strengthening its workforce that the Corporation can ensure cleanliness in the city, they contended.
