The district administration is taking all efforts to ban use of polythene bags to ensure that Tuticorin becomes a plastic free district.
To promote environmental hygiene, people and traders should restrict themselves from using non-recyclable plastic materials, Collector Ashish Kumar said.
Special teams comprising officials from urban and rural local bodies would be constituted to strictly monitor the same.
Listing out the stringent measures, he said that initially plastic disposable cups in tea stalls would be seized and destroyed.
With active participation of students from various schools, awareness campaign on the environmental pollution caused due to the use of non-recyclable plastic would be organised on January 6 in all blocks of the district.
In the urban limit, awareness campaigns would be organised in all wards and he urged the students to spread the message among people, including traders.
Besides, mass cleaning programmes would be scheduled in both rural and urban area from January 9 to 14 and from January 23 to 28.
Garbage would be removed and specific dumping yards would be notified.
Raids and inspections need to be conducted frequently, he added.
