CHENNAI: Traffic congestion in the Broadway area could be a thing of the past. The Chennai Corporation’s proposal for the construction of a multi-level parking lot in the Broadway bus stand is in the final stage.
The Kolkata-based company, which has passed the first two stages of the tender process, has submitted its financial bid. It would be submitted to the civic body’s council for its consent.
“If the council clears the financial quote, the next step is only to give the work order after which work can commence,” said an official of the Chennai Corporation. Traffic management has been a major issue in the George Town area. The proposal for the multi-level parking came, following a traffic study.
The project would be executed on a design, build, operate basis and the project period is two years during and after which the free flow of buses should not be affected. The Corporation would provide 3,000 sq metres of land for the construction, which can be done even underground. The developer can choose any portion of the terminus that is convenient, he added.
Space has to be provided for a total of 500 cars and 790 bikes in the multi-level parking lot. The company has to provide parking for proposed commercial complex in addition to this. Everything has to be according to DCR rules.
The parking fee has been fixed by the Corporation. Cars would be charged Rs. 20 for the first hour and bikes Rs. 5 for the first hour. As parking fee alone would not suffice the developer would be allowed to also reserve up to two floors for the construction of commercial complex that he can rent out. The parking lot and the commercial space have to be returned to the civic body after an 18 year period.
