Tirupur: Collector C. Samayamoorthy distributed Nirmal Gram Puraskar- 2008, an award instituted by Union Ministry of Rural Development for promotion of rural sanitation, to 23 village panchayats in the district at a function held here recently.

The awards were received by the respective presidents of the village panchayats, from the Collector.

Addressing the winners, Mr. Samayamoorthy asked them not to get complacent with the award; rather they should continue the effort to maintain their villages free from open defecation and be role models for other villages to emulate them.

“Elected representatives of the award winning panchayats should come forward to influence their counterparts in nearby villages to stop open defecation, if it is not eliminated there already, and help them shift to safe defecation practices,” he said.

The Collector urged the civic body representatives to ensure that overhead water tanks and other water storage units in their respective jurisdictions were cleaned once every 15 days.

“Gram panchayats should bring the topic of sanitation to the forefront of social and political development discourses to have clean and hygienic villages,” he said.

District Revenue Officer K.V.Muralitharan was present at the function.
