CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday ordered notice to the Election Commission, Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, and the State government, represented by the Chief Secretary, on a petition seeking a direction to the Commission to take stern action against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the party candidates elected in the recent elections for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice H.L. Gokhale and Justice D. Murugesan, said the three respondents would take instructions and inform the court on the maintainability of the petition. The matter has been posted for June 25.

K.R. Ramaswamy alias ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy said the DMK suddenly called for a “general total bandh” on April 23 on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, which was highlighted by the party and its allies to win voters’ sympathy.
