P. Benjamin (42), a councillor belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), was elected Deputy Mayor on Saturday. Chennai Corporation Commissioner D.Karthikeyan told the Council meeting that Mr.Benjamin was elected unopposed.
Mr.Benjamin submitted his nomination paper on Saturday to Mr.Karthikeyan, who is also the District Election Officer. After ascertaining that Mr.Benjamin is the only person to file nomination paper for the post of Deputy Mayor, Mr.Karthikeyan made the announcement regarding his election.
Mr.Benjamin is a resident of Nolambur, a newly added area of the Chennai Corporation. A total of 184 councillors participated in the Council meeting.
After the Council meeting, K.P.Shankar of ward 5, took oath as councillor at the chamber of the Commissioner.
