CHENNAI: Celebrated singers, music directors and lyricists sashayed on the ramp to signal the launch of the second edition of Meera Isaiaruvi Tamil Music Awards ’09, organised by Social Media, here on Saturday.
Themed ‘Celebrating excellence in music,’ the awards pay tribute to the most popular songs and albums of the year 2008-09 in all avenues of music including film, Carnatic and folk songs. “Tamil music industry is one of the largest in the country with more than 1,000 songs being composed every year. Success of many movies have been credited to their music scores. The award will create a platform where every niche in the field of music will be recognised,” said Social Media director Sujit Kumar.
Apart from the regular awards for music such as best composer, singer, debutant and lyricist, the award function would also select the best choreography, direction, conceptualisation, picturisation and performance of songs.
First vote was cast by actor Khushboo after a major chunk of people from music industry flaunted their ramp-walking skills.
Singers including Naresh Iyer, Benny Dayal, Karthik, Rahul Nambiar, Ranjit, Krish, Vijay Yesudas, Shwetha Mohan, Madhumitha, SrilekhaParathasarathy, Sumangali, Charulatha Mani, Suchitra and Mahati walked over the ramp sporting a blend of classic and contemporary attires designed by Priya Rajesh.
The awards would be presented based on the votes from the public.
A promotional truck carrying voting ballot would travel across the State and Puducherry to collect votes from the people. During the road show to collect votes, Meera Shampoo would conduct a talent hunt by giving 10 lucky winners an opportunity to get trained under playback singer Srinivas. Best of the 10 trainees would win a chance to perform live at the award function, which would be at Nehru Stadium on July 11.
