SATTUR: The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to expedite the project to lay a second railway line between Chennai and Kanyakumari.

In a memorandum sent to the Minister, its general secretary P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian said that it was a key project for South Tamil Nadu since trains were not able to maintain punctuality and new train services could not be introduced on the single line.

Stating that patronage for train services in this sector was high, he said reserved tickets in the trains get exhausted within a short period and the trains were always overcrowded.

New train services

The chamber also demanded introduction of new train services from Kanyakumari to Varanasi and Jodhpur, both via Madurai.

Introduction of an intermediate class between first class and sleeper class, increasing the travel distance for season ticket holders up to 200 km and providing escalators for all foot-over-bridges were the chamber’s other demands.
