ERODE: Eight in 1,000 children suffer from congenital heart diseases (CHD) and only a few of the affected children get medical care, said doctors C.S. Muthu Kumaran and Neville A.G. Solomon of Apollo Childrens Hospital.

Talking to reporters at a meeting held here on Sunday, they said 60 per cent children required surgical intervention and in the rest the heart problem could be cured through medicines. The surgical intervention could be either open-heart or key-hole, the doctors said and added that such facilities existed in their hospital.

Causes

Talking about the causes of such congenital heart diseases, Dr. Kumaran said it could vary and as for the maternal reasons were concerned consumption of a few medicines during pregnancy, being diabetic during the period, etc. could cause heart defects in the child.

Surgeries

The doctors were in Erode to give a talk on the surgeries they had conducted ever since the 80-bed hospital started functioning.

They said they would like Erode hospitals to refer children with heart ailments to them for proper diagnosis.
