Many candidates migrating to Puducherry, Chennai

Job mela being held on second Friday of every month

VILLUPURAM: A total of 2.35 lakh candidates are on the current rolls of the Employment Office here. They include illiterates and diploma and degree holders, according to C. Kathiravan, Collector-in-charge.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Mr. Kathiravan noted that Villupuram, comprising eight revenue divisions and 22 panchayat unions, was one of the biggest districts in the State.

The public sector undertakings in the district were getting their manpower requirements through the employment office. However, a vast majority of candidates were migrating to places such as Puducherry and Chennai in search of jobs.

To stop the exodus Mr. Kathiravan had appealed to private organisations to recruit candidates through the employment office. A job mela was being held in the office on the second Friday of every month and private organisations could select candidates as per their requirements. Those candidates who have been on the employment rolls for long could also call on the District Employment Officer on that day to try for suitable jobs.

In another statement, Mr. Kathiravan said the project implementation wing of the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation had proposed to conduct free skill development programmes for the candidates, both men and women, in the age group of 18-35 years and who had passed Class X and Plus Two examinations.

It would impart training in trades such as welding and plumbing and coach air-conditioner mechanics, cell phone mechanics and so on. The period of training would range from three months to one year. At the end of the course, the candidates would be given certificates and jobs in deserving cases. The candidates would have to apply either to the Block Development Officer (BDO) or to the Mahalir Thittam Officer before July 27 and interviews would be conducted as follows:
