RAMANATHAPURAM: The ‘Adi’ festival of Sri Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram began on Thursday with the hoisting of holy flag.

Several hundreds of people from different parts of the district particularly from Rameswaram took part in it. Banumathi Natchiyar, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, was among those who attended it.

The important event of the festival is Adi Amavasya that falls on Tuesday. Lord Ramanathaswamy and Parvathavarthini will give darshan to devotees at Agnitheerthakadarkarai on that day.

A large number of devotees from different parts of the country will throng Rameswaram to have a holy dip and do rituals to their ancestors. The silver car of the temple will be taken in the night. The “thirukalyana utsavam” will take place between 7.30 a.m. to 8.30 am. The festival will conclude on August 1.

Temple authorities have made special arrangements to conduct devotional lecture, art and cultural shows during the festival days.
