Only affiliated colleges have been ranked: Vice-Chancellor

: The Anna University of Technology-Madurai has released the rank list of its affiliated engineering colleges for the benefit of students who are attending the engineering admission counselling going on now.

This rank list was posted in the university's website www.autmdu.ac.in and the list comprises 33 affiliated engineering colleges in five districts under its jurisdiction — Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Theni and Ramanathapuram.

R. Murugesan, Vice-Chancellor, AUT Madurai, told The Hindu on Tuesday that the rank list was prepared based on the colleges' pass percentage report of January 2011 first semester examinations.

“We did not take the autonomous engineering colleges into consideration because their question papers are separate and they declare their results. Only the affiliated colleges have been ranked,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

As per the varsity's list, the Velammal College of Engineering and Technology tops the rank list with 92.82 pass percentage in the first semester examinations. In this college, 323 students had passed in all subjects in the first semester out of 348 students who appeared for the examinations.

The second and third ranks were bagged by Central Electrochemical Research Institute in Karaikudi (90.63 pass percentage) and K. L. N. College of Engineering (77.53 pass percentage), Madurai, respectively. According to E. B. Perumal Pillai, Registrar, the two autonomous institutions that were not taken in to the rank list were Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) and the Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology in Karaikudi. The rank list was prepared and released on Friday after taking into account the number of students who appeared for first semester examinations (January 2011) and those who passed in all subjects. Another rank list was also released by the AUT Madurai based on the pass percentage in second semester results of June 2011 (subject to the declaration of revaluation results).

Here, CECRI topped the list with first rank by getting 87.50 pass percentage. While the second rank in this list went to Velammal College of Engineering and Technology which got 86.96 pass percentage, the K. L. N. College of Engineering stood in the third position with 68.10 pass percentage.

For students and parents to know about the year of establishment of an engineering college in Madurai region, the university compiled a list. First in this list is the Mohamed Sathak Engineering College, established in 1984, followed by PSNA College of Engineering and Technology which was also established during the same year. Engineering colleges established in Madurai region starting from 1984 to 2010 are given in order by the university.
