Councillors, cutting across party lines, oppose the decision

In all probability Perur and Vellalore Town Panchayats and Chinniampalayam Panchayat will not be a part of the Coimbatore Corporation.

Sources in the Corporation say that the State Government, after having excluded the three local bodies, may not start afresh the process of inclusion.

And even if it wants to there is too little time left to reinitiate the process.

They say that the Government must first announce its intent to include the three local bodies in the Government Gazette and then provide six weeks for the public to respond.

And based on the response, take a call on inclusion or exclusion of the three local bodies.

Local body elections

Assuming that the Government goes through the rigmarole, it will be hardly left with time to start the local body elections, which in itself may take around eight weeks.

The sources point out that after having followed the due process and decided to exclude the two town panchayats and a village panchayat, the Government will not like a revisit.

The decision to exclude the three local bodies was a thorny issue at the recently convened Corporation Council meeting, where councillors, cutting across party lines, sought their inclusion. Argument

Their argument was that Perur was a heritage town with a famous temple, Vellalore hosted the Corporation's 600-acre-and-odd dump yard and Chinniampalayam the city airport.

Excluding the three may not bode well for the city's development.

The proposal the Corporation submitted excluded the three local bodies and instead sought the inclusion of Vellakinaru and Chinna Vedampatti Town Panchayats.

The Councillors were against this and said the three local bodies ought to be included. They also passed a resolution demanding the same.

Bifurcation

Likewise, the Councillors' other demand to bifurcate the Corporation Ward 72 is also likely to be rejected.

They sought for the division of the ward citing very high population compared to other wards. The sources say that without the details of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe population, it will be impossible to bifurcate the ward. The ward has over 32,000 voters.
