CHENNAI: An acceleration meet was organised for the 99999 lights-out campaign by Exnora here on Sunday. R. Sarath Kumar, actor and president of the South Indian Film Artist Association, inaugurated the event by switching on nine LED bulbs.
Speaking on the occasion, he urged people to switch off lights for 9 minutes at 9 p.m. on September 9 to show solidarity in the fight against global warming.
“Many use the phrase ‘global warming’ but not many understand what it really means. Instead of conferences, there should be outreach programmes which target people at the grassroots-level,” he said.
A 20-point guideline titled “Use human resources instead of natural resources” was released and various methods to reduce energy consumption were discussed.
Exnora International founder M.B. Nirmal said “We waste natural resources by using them up. We waste human resources by not using them. This scenario has to change.”
According to Mr. Nirmal, though events like the Lights Out campaign are symbolic, it induces curiosity and is a novel method to make the public participate.
“Most people are not interested to hear about the causes and effects of global warming. The 99999 campaign is catchy and we think it will be easier to get the message across,” he said.
This year’s event is a follow-up to the 88888 lights-out campaign last year.
Though there was a lot of public participation, the organisers feel there has to be better follow-up and sustained engagement.
“We just hope people don’t forget about the message after those nine minutes,” said Abdul Ghani, Chief Coordinator, 99999 Lights Out campaign. An exhibition on eco-friendly products was also conducted as part of the event.
