THANJAVUR: Police have arrested five persons on Friday and recovered from them jewellery, silver ornaments, cash and other articles worth Rs.7 lakh, which were reported missing in 21 house burglary cases that occurred in various places in the past few weeks.

S. Elambaruthi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Thanjavur town and M. Thamizh Selvan, Inspector, Thanjavur South, told presspersons on Saturday that the gang was headed by Sasi alias Sasikumar (28) son of Krishnan, Annai Sivakami Nagar, Reddypalayam road.

The members of the gang arrested by police include Appu alias Vetriselvan of Needamangalam, Pandi of Needamangalam Sandyagu of Mathakottai near Thanjavur and Pandiyan of Thiruvenkataudayanpatti, Thanjavur. The burglaries were committed in Rahman Nagar and Rail Nagar.

They have also committed crimes in areas under the jurisdiction of Tamil University, Medical College and Thanjavur South police stations, Mannargudi police station and Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district.

The stolen articles, include 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver articles, cash Rs.26,000, a camera, a DVD player, a binocular and a laptop computer.
