12 teams competed to prove their dancing prowess
CHENNAI: They received thunderous applauds from the audience even before they could show their energetic dance moves, and when the ‘Dream Team’ performed for eight non-stop minutes even the judges had to give it to them.
The team from Loyola College was declared winner of The Hindu NXg Campus Jive ’09 on Friday by the panel of judges comprising actor Sangeetha, dancer/producer Varalakshmi Sarathkumar and managing partner of Pothys S. Ramesh.
In a well-fought finale of the inter-collegiate western dance competition, 12 teams competed to show their dancing prowess in hip hop, rap, jive, free style, ballet and other dance moves at the Sri Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Hall. The Loyola team members electrified their dance moves first with ultra violet lights, which later dimmed to their swirling to other beaming rays emerging from different corners of the hall.
The all-boys team from Jeppiaar Engineering College was the first team to set the stage on fire with hip hop and neither the judges disappointed them. They came first runners-up, while one of the teams (D.S.D. Homies) from Ethiraj College for Women took the third position. The judges appreciated the teams for their level of energy and keeping them entertained. Besides the three top prizes, there were 12 individual performance prizes, of which Loyola boys bagged two. The three-hour long event saw a good mix of choreography. The team from St. Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, for example, with its somersault moves made the audience wonder if they would fall of from the stage.
The girls from the S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College through their poignant performance on the theme disability made a point that one must not disregard the physically challenged. If the future is on robotics then the dancers from Hindustan University grooved to a techno robotics dance.
