Isha Outreach organized an awareness campaign to mark World Environment Day (WED) at Periakovilur village in Kolli Hills on Sunday.

The campaign was aimed at enlightening the people on the need to conserve medicinal plants in Kolli Hills and to protect land and forest resources for sustainable development.

Earlier that day volunteers and staff of the AYUSH Isha initiative took out a processions in which they held placards and banners as they raised slogans on this year's theme for WED observance: ‘Forests: Nature at your service'.

The procession also touched upon the importance of medicinal plants of Kolli Hills and their medical implications.

Forest Range Officer Jothimani who delivered the special address in the campaign stressed the role of the local community in conserving medicinal plants and forest resources for sustainable development.


Forest officials who took part in the observance also distributed saplings of medicinal plants free of cost to students and children who volunteered to cultivate the saplings in open ground that was near their houses.

At Tiruchengode, World Environment Day was observed by a sapling plantation drive organized by the Tiruchengode Sub Jail at the Tiruchengode Government Hospital on Sunday.

Prison officials and doctors of the GH also planted saplings on the hospital premises as part of the drive.

Cleanliness drives were also organized by various Non Government Organizations and service oriented organizations in different parts of the town.
