Pomp and gaiety mark Christmas

KARUR: Church bells tolled as priests led midnight mass in churches as the people in the textile town celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ on Tuesday. They exchanged pleasantries with one another and distributed cakes and sweets to their near and dear ones.

The main function and mass was held on the night of Monday at the St. Teresa’s Church, while across the district prayers were held at the St. Caramel Matha Church at Pasupathypalayam, St. Antony’s Church at Velayuthampalayam and the Infant Jesus Church at Puliyur where the devout congregated in large numbers despite the chill weather. Churches were decorated with crib depicting the Nativity, while ornamental Xmas trees and people dressed up as Santa Claus added lustre to the proceedings.


Gaiety and enthusiasm marked Christmas celebrations at Thanjavur on Tuesday. Special mass was held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church and all other churches. People attired in their best thronged churches this morning and offered prayers. Christmas stars twinkled at many places and Santa claus was also there to make the day merry. Distribution of cakes and exchange of pleasantries marked the occasion.

In a message, Devadoss Ambrose, Bishop of Thanjavur said that blessings of Christ is on all people irrespective of their economic status. Christ’s love is more on weaker sections and the poor. He will come to the rescue of those who pray to Him.


Thousands of pilgrims on Tuesday attended the prayer at the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni near here. Thousands of devotees thronged Velankanni since Monday for attending the prayers and special masses that were conducted in several Indian languages in the morning.

Special prayers were also conducted for those who lost their lives in the tsunami tragedy three years ago. On Monday night, the Velankanni church was illuminated and decorated for the Christmas fete.

A large number of people attended the prayers at New Jerusalem Church and also in the Zion Church in Tranquebar.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and other private operators ran special buses to Velankanni since Monday in connection with the Christmas festival.

The police made elaborate security arrangements at the Velankanni church on Monday and Tuesday.


Thousands of people participated in the prayers at the famous Church in Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry on Tuesday.
