MADURAI: Madurai Kamban Kazhagam organised annual cultural competitions to mark its fifth anniversary celebrations on Thursday.

Elocution, essay, music, painting competitions and karagattam for Kamban lyrics provided space for students and the public to exhibit their knowledge of the legendary poet and his works.

In the elocution competition M. Parveen Nisha and M. Nivetha of Meenakshi Government College for Women won the first and second prizes respectively and T. Banupariya of EMG Yadava College for Women came third.

In the essay writing competition, R. Vasanthi of Sourashtra Teacher Training College, P. Vadivukarasi of Meenakshi Government College for Women and R. Veerammal of S. Kottaipatti Parasakthi College emerged winners.

In the music competitions, M. Monica and S. Sornalakshmi of Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Vidyalayam won the first two prizes and V. Sheshapriya of Meenakshi Government College for Women came third.

J. Mohammed Nasser and K. Senthoor Manikandan of MC Higher Secondary School won prizes in general painting competition while M.A. Thangaraju Pandiyan, won the prize in public category.

In the karagattam competition, R. Sivakaumar and his team from Madura College, M. Divya and team from S. Kottaipatti Parasakthi College and P. Shanthi and team from Sourashtra Teacher Training College won the prizes.

Solomon Pappiah presided over the celebration and R. Chokkalingam, secretary, inaugurated the competitions. Students from 26 colleges participated.
