Karim Kutty Multi Services has kept it ready to reach needy.

TIRUCHI: A boat stationed near the TVS Toll Gate Junction in the city has been attracting curious on-lookers all these days.

The question in their minds is obvious. What purpose does the boat serve there? Well. In answer lies an element of philanthropy. A private agency, Karim Kutty Multi Services, has kept the boat in a state of readiness for despatch in the event of submergence in low-lying localities. One could discount the possibility of heavy floods in the near future.

But then, when the city witnessed the fury of floods on a couple of occasions over the past few decades, the delay in undertaking relief operations due to absence of boats was conspicuously felt. There were several instances of residents remaining stranded in their homes for days together, especially in localities in and around Karumandapam and Vayalur Road. The agency is keen to avert such a situation in future.

With the Cauvery in full flow, the agency keeps receiving requests from certain quarters for letting the boat on hire for pleasure rides; but the proprietor Karim Kutty refuses them politely saying that the very purpose of acquiring the boat was for rendering free services at times of need.

Of late, the agency has been receiving such requests from the Indian Red Cross Society and NCC units attached to educational institutions for training purposes.
