Coimbatore: The Member of Parliament from Congress representing the Nilgiris Lok Sabha Constituency, R. Prabhu has appealed to the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel for considering an alternative proposal mooted by the residents of Peelamedu area living around the airport for acquiring vacant lands for the proposed acquisition.
In a memorandum, Mr.Prabhu had provided a map prepared by the residents of Goldwins, Chinniampalayam Residents Association, on the alternative plan for acquisition of vacant lands.
Appreciating the Minister for finalising the plans for the expansion of the airport, Mr.Prabhu pointed out that the residents were not happy over the present land acquisition plans since it would be displace 1,180 residents affecting 5,000 people and employment of over 4,500 people working in small and medium industrial units in the area.
In addition to this, the proposed land acquisition plans would result in a compound wall for the airport cutting across the streets and making people go around the future airport compound.
Hence, he pointed out that the new terminal building could be constructed on the opposite side of the runway utilising the nearly 1,000 acres of barren vacant land that would provide enough space for future expansions like additional runway, taxi way, additional terminal building.
The option would provide access to the airport from different directions.
