ERODE: Erode district with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 15.5 per cent is in top in Tamil Nadu and better than the State by four per cent, Collector T. Udhayachandran has said.

Participating at the inauguration of the Erode District Office of the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday, he said the district was ahead in industrial development, thanks to the culture of entrepreneurship.

The culture would further get a boost on the focussed platform the CII had brought to Erode, the Collector said and assured all possible help from the administration’s side.

He then told the visitors that the district had been a pioneer in many management concepts like public-private partnerships and corporate social responsibility.

For example, Erode government hospital would get two dialysis machines at Rs. 1.5 core, thanks to sponsorships from Sakthi Masala and SKM group of companies, a good example of corporate social responsibility.

No less important than business was agriculture in Erode, the Collector said and added the district was one of the top five districts in the Country in drip irrigation. As far as drip irrigation in sugarcane went, the district stood first in the Country, he added.

Mr. Udhayachandran then requested the CII to come of the aid textile industry which faced labour shortage. Chairman of the Southern Region of CII Pradipta K. Mohapatra said the industry body focussed on reaching small industrial towns, as they drove the Country’s economy. “The generators of wealth, the movers and shakers and drivers of the economy, all come from small towns.”

He referred to stock market investor and one of the world’s richest, Warren Buffet, born in the small town of Omaha in Nebraska, and India’s Sunil Bharti Mittal of Airtel to drive home his point.

In Erode, Mr. Mohapatra said the CII would help industries grow into billion Dollar enterprises and suggested P.C. Duraisamy of Sakthi Masala to take the lead. Gopal Srinivasan, chairman, CII, Tamil Nadu, said the organisation worked with the Tamil Nadu Government to prepare a Vision 2025 document focussing on top five issues that concerned the State.

In the process of preparing the document, 125 people had been identified who would be State’s visionaries.

Opinions were being gathered from everybody concerned, he said. Mr. Duraisamy, chairman of the Erode office, said he looked forward to working with the CII. D. Venkateswaran, the vice-chairman, proposed the vote of thanks.
