Karungalpalayam library renovated; 40,000 books will be given to the library
ERODE: “Erode District Library will have a modern and spacious building at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crore,” said School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Tuesday.
He was inaugurating the renovated library building at Karungalpalayam, a suburb of Erode, built at a cost of Rs. 19 lakh. On July 31, 1921, Subramaniya Bharathy visited Erode and addressed Karungalpalayam library function. After 40 days he passed away. The lecture delivered by the great poet at Karungalapalaym was his last.
Erode administration recently decided to renovate the old building with the Erode District Collector’s discretionary fund. Library has many portraits and books of Bharathiar. His lectures and writings in ‘Swadesamitran’ Tamil Paper were also displayed.
Inaugurating the building, the Minister said this library was a Bharathiar memorial library and its present grade would be upgraded and another 40,000 books would be given to the library soon. An international library with all modern systems would be built in Chennai soon, he said.The Minister wanted villagers to make use of the libraries. He also appealed to the public to donate books to the libraries.
Presiding over the function, Erode District Collector T. Udhaychandran said the Karungalpalayam library would be made as the best library in the State.
The Kangeyam MLA ‘Vidiyal’ S. Sekar wanted the local bodies to remit the library cess funds collected from the public with the library department and he urged the Government to start libraries in all the village Panchayats.
Modakurichi MLA R.M. Palanisamy said libraries would bring down criminal activities.
