KANCHEEPURAM: Diamond jewellery worth Rs.16 lakh, which was stolen from a visitor at a seashore lodge in Kovalam near Chennai, was recovered within 36 hours by the Kancheepuram district police.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram district, K. Periaiya, the police received a complaint, from Rukmani Reddy of Bangalore on Tuesday morning, that a diamond necklace, a diamond bracelet and diamond ear-studs were found missing from the cottage where she stayed along with her parents after attending a party at the resort on Monday.

Resort employees engaged in housekeeping work were interrogated subsequently and their fingerprints were also recorded.

The police suspected Vinodh of Kolkatta, guard of a private security agency engaged by the resort management.

On interrogation, Vinodh confessed that his brother Jayaprakash, who was assigned patrolling duty on Monday night, had committed the crime when the inmates were asleep.

He also said that he and his brother were planning to return to Kolkatta with the booty in a day or two.

The police arrested Jayaprakash and recovered the valuables on Wednesday, Mr.Periaiya said.

A camera which was stolen by Jayaprakash from another visitor to the resort 20 days ago was also recovered by the police.
