Trade promotion centre to be opened today
Archipelago keen to build on cultural and historical bonds with India
Medical tourism will gain as India offers cheaper alternative for Indonesian patients
CHENNAI: An Indonesia Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) will be opened here on Tuesday to facilitate bilateral trade missions and hard-sell the archipelago as a largely unexplored tourism hotspot.
The Government of Indonesia is opening ITPCs across the world to help investors and businessmen set up shop without relying on agents or middlemen, said K.J. Kumar, Indonesian Consul in Chennai.
Indonesia’s Ambassador to India Andi Ghalib will launch the ITPC.
The Consul said that Indonesia was keen to build on the cultural and historical bonds with India to promote bilateral business partnerships.
“We believe that a synergy of India’s technological prowess, skilled manpower and healthcare pre-eminence and Indonesia’s favourable investment climate and rich natural resources can be mutually beneficial,” Mr. Kumar said.
Indonesia is looking at Indian investments in the automotive sector and the higher education and healthcare sectors.
Its natural wealth provides opportunities in the sectors of coal, metal, timber, palmoil and spices.
Apart from the visa-on-arrival facility for tourists spending between a week or a month in the country, Indonesia also provides attractive sops for Indian start-up enterprises.
The country allows Indian businessmen to operate fully-owned enterprises and duty-free import of plant machinery, Mr.Kumar said.
Medical tourism could be a big gain for India as it offers a cheaper alternative for Indonesian patients travelling for treatment to places such as Australia, U.S. or Singapore, he said.
Small and medium enterprises
Indonesia is also keen on promoting Small and Medium Enterprises, that create employment opportunities and help in broad-basing economic growth, the Consul said.
Aksamil Khair, ITPC director, and Tien Danarti Mesra, deputy director, were present.
The ITPC is located at Ispahani Centre, Nungambakkam (Ph: 42089196/Fax: 42089197 and email: email@example.com).
