Udhagamandalam: Efforts being made to document various aspects of the Nilgiris should be encouraged, said Collector Anandrao V.Patil here on Friday.

Participating in the inaugural function of the Nilgiri Documentation Centre (NDC) established by the Save Nilgiris Campaign (SNC) in association with the Chennai-based Development Promotion Group at the Sullivan Memorial in Kannerimukku near Kotagiri, he said that such facilities helped showcase developments over the centuries.

On the collection of photographs and other items at the NDC, he observed that it was in many ways unique. Pointing out that many of the photographs were rare and highly informative, he said that the administration would extend whatever help possible to the Centre.

A proposal to levy an entry fee would be considered. In addition to eco- tourism, heritage tourism should be promoted in the Nilgiris. In developing the Nilgiris particularly Udhagamandalam the people should extend a helping hand to the authorities.

The Project Director, Hill Area Development Programme (HADP), C.Samayamoorthy, said that a Nilgiris Cultural Heritage Centre would be constructed by the HADP here at Rs. 95 lakh.

He said that the Stone House hill here would be beautified at Rs. 10 lakh, and for preserving historical items Rs. 75,000 would be given to the NDC. A sum of Rs. 24 lakh had been earmarked for protecting heritage buildings such as the structures housing the Breeks School and the Collectorate.

The rare photographs at the NDC would be brought out in a book form by the HADP.

The Director, British Council, South India, Chris Gibson, said that the eco system of the Nilgiris was unique. The district was a source of power and water. Various attributes of the district should be conserved.

The Honorary Director, NDC, Dharmalingam Venugopal, pointed out that the people of the district owed a great deal to John Sullivan, the founder of modern Nilgiris. The Sullivan Memorial should be promoted as a tourist centre and research library of excellence. The NDC would endeavour to bring under one roof the huge volume of valuable materials on the Nilgiris within India and abroad.
