Four schools to get buildings at a cost of Rs. 6 crore
TIRUPUR: With Tirupur Municipality being upgraded as a Corporation from January 1, municipal schools that cater to the wards of poor migrant workers will become the first beneficiaries due to the elevation of the local body.
In the first-ever major initiative aimed at giving a fillip to create infrastructure, four important schools around the town would soon have more classrooms, toilets and an auditorium at a cost of Rs. 6 crore, sources said.
Jaivabai Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School, which has a strength of 7,104 and considered to be the highest student strength in the region, will get 33 more classrooms at a cost of Rs. 2.30 crore. Besides construction of toilets, the schools will also get a spacious auditorium at a cost Rs. 1crore.
Students have been suffering for long due to lack of adequate classrooms. At present, the school has only 85 classrooms against the requirement of 150. Work has been progressing for construction of 15 classrooms by a leading export house of Tirupur, Eastman Exports Global Clothing.
Nanjappa Municipal Boys Higher Secondary School will get 24 classrooms and a compound wall at a cost of Rs. 1.40 crore while Palaniammal Municipal Higher Secondary School will have 24 classrooms at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.30crore. KSC Government Higher Secondary School will get 10 classrooms at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh.
During his recent visit, Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi agreed to the plea by the Municipal Chairman, K. Selvaraj, to address the long-pending demand. Mr. Mardi also visited these schools.
According to Mr. Selvaraj, the local body has prepared the estimates and other administrative procedures to take up the work. Education fund of the municipality to the tune of Rs. 6 crore, which has been unused for long, would be used for these works. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who is slated to visit Tirupur on December 29 to inaugurate the Corporation, is expected to inaugurate the construction of school buildings too.
