ARIYALUR: The Agriculture Department has intensified its campaign to popularise the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique among farmers in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts during the ‘kuruvai’ and ‘samba’ seasons this year.

The Agriculture Department has evolved a comprehensive plan, fixing a target of 18,000 hectares, for promoting the technique in these districts. A target of 5,100 hectares has been set for Perambalur district while the balance 12,900 hectares will be covered in Ariyalur district, the Joint Director of Agriculture (in-charge), S. Sivakumar, told ‘The Hindu’ here on Sunday.

In Perambalur district, a maximum target of 1,600 hectares has been fixed for Veppanthattai and Veppur block each; 1,100 hectares for Perambalur block; and 800 hectares for Alathur block.

He said that in Ariyalur district, a maximum extent of 3,600 hectares would be covered in T. Pazhur block; 2,300 hectares in Tirumanur and Jayamkondam each; 1,800 hectares in Andimadam;1,650 hectares in Sendurai; 1,300 hectares in Ariyalur.

Farmers were responsive to the SRI techniques following sensitisation programmes and intensive campaigns being launched by the Department which has mobilised 50 Assistant Agriculture Officers, including the newly-recruited 33 officials, for launching intensive campaign in these districts.
